Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado

Threatened wife and daughter escorted out of town, what next?

What legal action is generally taken in reported cases of domestic abuse?

The backstory: I have a good friend whose father just threatened to injure her and her mother without any clear provocation, then harassed her mother over the phone when they sought refuge at a friend's house, threatening to kill them if they returned. Eventually her mother called the police and they were escorted out of town. She is staying with her grandparents who live about four hours away, and she is afraid that she may have to move away permanently (my town's pop. is approx. 1500 if that matters). My friend is 13.

Is it likely that this will happen if the incident was caused by a psychological issue in the father? And if it wasn't? Is there a ballpark figure of how long it could take before she can come back?
