The answer to your question depends on many factors, but what you need to do is advise them of the nature of your medical condition (I'm assuming it's cancer) and ask that they reasonably accommodate you by extending your leave of absence. Check your employee handbook for the employer's leave of absence policies and ask your friends at work if they know of other employees who have had extended leaves of absence. Consult with an employment law attorney in your area, to determine your rights and obligations.
