Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

my parents have been seperated for over 12 years...my dad has lived in virginia for over 12 years...my mother is dying ...my sister called to tell my dad that she's sending the bill to bury her to him.. that he has to pay for the funeral...my question is " does he legally have to pay for this"

Under the statute, the payment of funeral expenses and expenses of her last illness shall be paid out of her estate, if sufficient, and if not, then these expenses shall be paid by her spouse.
