That all depends on what kind of "inheritance." If it is a joint bank account with yourself, then you just go to the bank and take the money out. If it's a will that leaves you the inheritance, then you may need to probate the will in the probate court in the town where the deceased person lived. If it's life insurance, then you merely show the death certificate and proof of who you are to the insurance company and they send you a check. If there is no will and there is money and/or real estate, then you may have to "open" an estate with the probate court to get your inheritance.

You should go down to the local probate court and speak with the clerks. They are usually very helpful.
