what happens when a collection agency states they are going to put a claim on you?

Normally, it is just a threat to get you to pay. They probably mean that they are going to sue you for the money owed. However, this usually does not happen until they have exhausted extensive collection efforts first. This normally entails calling repeatedly and writing letters demanding payment on the account.
