Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

On Sept. 24th, I was contacted by a person saying that he was with a law firm, and he left a voice mail. When i called back, the person was actually a debt collector, claiming that I owed a debt. I asked for proof of said debt. He said that he would comply. The next day, i received two letters from attorny/debt collector. One was a letter stating that I owed a little over 10 thousand dollars and the other one was supposed to be the proof of it. The second letter was actually a previous loan debt that has been satisfied already. I guess my question would be: What do I do now? Not pay the debt because I wasn't given satisfactory proof? Or just assume it is a mistake and pay the 10 thousand? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
