Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

If I'm facing criminal charges for a 3rd degree felony and I can't afford a lawyer and I have a upcoming arraignment hearing and need a public defender at my hearing do I plea not guilty and wait to I'm assign a lawyer by the court and then have them see if they can work out a deal for me
