Beyond the written trial transcript, are the audio files of criminal trials ever reviewed?

Reviewed by who? If you want a copy, you can get one. Since it's a public record anyone can review them (so long as they pay for them).

Frequently. Court reporters make mistakes so it is always beneficial to review the audio transcript. Additionally, acquiring a copy of the audio transcript is much cheaper then the transcript. I often listen to the audio prior to ordering the transcript to keep costs down for my client. Written transcripts are necessary for appeals and when dealing with bifurcated hearings so you will likely still need them.
