Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

What can I do to protect my child?? His paternal parent (pains me to give him the respect of calling him dad or father since he's never been one to my son), had come around very sporadically for the first year. Then he stopped coming around, except one Christmas a couple years later and a single call to tell me his grandmother had passed away (that was about 5 or 6 yrs ago). He's never helped support him. My son is 9 yr old now. He doesn't know him as anything. When my son was a baby he had severe asthmatic allergies, his father would still come (when he did come that is) smelling like cigarettes and doused in cologne KNOWING he would cause him to end up on a nebulizer for the next week because of it. Is there ANYTHING I can do to protect my son from him just waltzing in after this many years. He can't ever claim he had no idea how to contact me. My family has lived at the same address for 20 yrs, I've had the same phone number for many years, and I've worked at the same job for over 10 yrs. He has another son (older than mine) that he has supported and sees, though his ex wife did try to fight that early in their divorce. He has had a few bar fights and DUI's over the years, but that's all I really know about him anymore.

You can file a petition with the court to permanently terminate his parental rights. Use of a lawyer is recommended.
