Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Relocation then company closes

After 4 years with them, I was transferred to Florida from Ohio 4/00 within my company. I sold my house and my wife quit a good job 8/00. I had no employment contract.I was reimbursed certain expenses but in 11/00 the company announced it was closing down. I was out of work 12/29/00. Do I have any recourse. Both my wife and I are both unemployed now. I would not have moved if I had known the company was closing.

Re: Relocation then company closes

I am an attorney in the Greater Tampa/St. Petersburg area. Generally, the case probably could be made that the company knew that you would be making considerable sacrifices to relocate and therefore they should be estopped from not accepting responsibility for damages. But there is the old legal term "you can't get blood from a stone." In this case substitute money for blood. What do you mean by "the company closed down"? Did they go bankrupt? Did someone else buy them out? The bottom line is even if you win in court, will there be money to pay your damages?
