Re: unsigned letter

You can never be forced to sign a letter or any other document. You can be fired for not signing something, as you can be fired for any reason. I always advise that if you disagree with a document you are asked to sign that you should indicate on the document simply that you disagree and sign it anyway. If you don't sign a document, many employers will put the document in your file with a notation that you refused to sign it. If you never refuse to sign a document, you will know this is untrue. It prevents the employer from "sneaking" a document into your file. Additionally, if the employer wants you to sign something that is untrue and you put the true facts in the document, it may provide you protection in the event there is retaliation over the testimony you provide whereas, if you refuse to sign it you have no such protection.

Remember, this information is for general purposes and all situations may not apply in all cases, therefore, if you have a specific question and need specific advice based upon all the facts of your situation, you should contact a lawyer to discuss the matter at length.
