Condo Association Tenant Approval

Not sure which area of law this belongs in...

My friend and her brother have a condo that was willed to them by their grandmother. They want to rent the condo to me, but the condo association has to interview and approve me (and I have to pay a fee for this interview). The condo association was only recently formed because, apparently, they had some bad tenants in the past. Do condo associations really have this much clout?

Yes, they absolutely do. If you do not agree to appear for the interview, they can bar you from living in the condominium.
