Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

We rented an apartment that was infested with toxic mold and repeat maintenance issues. After no help we sent a letter to surrender the keys and requested our deposit back. The agent who rented the unit to us...asked me to "sign" the lease. We apparently had not signed the main page. We refused. The agent was fired, the tenant next door was threatened not to tell about the mold.(I have proof) They have tried to dun us for the last few months rent. If they rent a place known to have mold isn't that illegal ?

it is not illegal to rent an apartment with known deficits. You have statutory remedies with regard to maintenance questions. The surrender of the keys and deposit return was not one of the remedies. your lease agreement actually controls. You would need to have apartment tested to determine what mold is present and whether the apartment is habitable or not. Seek some legal guidance as you are shooting from the hip on all the issues and not really getting to the heart of the matter.
