Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

Hi, my roommate and I just recently moved into an apartment complex in Saint Pete, FL. Since I had lived here 2 years ago and was very pleased with the community, I suggested we move here this time. However, since being here for this short period of time, we have come to realize that we made a huge mistake. We are both single girls who work and go to school full time. A week ago there was a shooting in our apartment complex and unknown to us at or before we signed the lease to move in, there have been multiple incidences where people's cars have been broken into. We have developed a buddy system if we should need to go outside for any reason, but because of our schedules we are not always home at the same time. We spent all of our money moving in here. Per our leasing office, the resident that was associated with the shooting was asked to vacate but that is all they would disclose, other residents who inquired about the incident were told to contact the local police dept. if they wanted more information, and currently there is no security patrol either. We do not want to spend the remainder of our lease in fear but we no longer feel safe here. How do we legally break our contract without having to spend the $2000 that would be required to do so?

Your lease agreement controls. The surrounding neighborhood and problems are issues you needed to consider prior to signing the lease.
