Legal Question in Personal Injury in Florida

I am a foreign exchange student and a minor. If I purchased a car (titled to my name) and had my own insurance, would my host family be liable at all if I got into a car accident? In other words, would they be responsible for what my parents would be? Would the laws apply as if they were my parents or legal guardians?

A minor cannot buy a car and have it titled in the minor's name and cannot purchase auto insurance in the minor's name.
