Legal Question in Social Security Law in Florida

Can an employer fire you for an unsigned social security card?

We had an internal audit in my company today and I was told I would be let go in 3 days unless I provided a *signed* social security card or my birth certificate to the company I have been working for for a year now. I've never had an employer ask to have the *signed copy of the card. If it is unsigned and I have it, what difference does it make that I sign it??? I've never had a problem being employed in the US. I'm an American citizen and was born here. I cannot find my birth certificate or my social security card and to get a new one I must provide a birth certificate for the SS Card and I cannot do all this within 3 days. Can they actually fire me for this?
