Legal Question in Social Security Law in Florida

Making money while on SS

Hi,

I was wondering something. If someone is on Social Security Disability and decides to start selling stuff online, or for a hobby, and ends up making quite a bit of money, will they loose their social security? Also, if a person who is on Social Security Disability decided to start their own business, would they loose their social security checks? Can you run business while on it?

Re: Making money while on SS

It's a complicated question, and it depends on your disability and how many hours per week you intend to work. It usually doesn't matter whether you run a business or not, but the amount of money you make matters very much. For instance, you usually can't make more then $940 per month and still be on SSD, but there are many exceptions to this rule. Blind individuals, for example, are allowed to earn more. You should speak with the SSA or with a Social Security lawyer and describe more details about your disability and what you want to do.
