Sheriff or process server shows up and hands the papers to an adult person over 18 who is present at a place where the defendant resides. If its a corporation, the papers can be left with either the registered agent, an officer or director or someone at the company's place of business. I assume we are talking about a person though.

However, there are all kinds of other issues which you do not address. Instead of asking nonsensical questions, try re-posting with actual relevant facts. Many creditors or even other plaintiffs will sometimes get service by leaving the papers at a prior address. Or leaving papers with someone who does not give them to the defendant. Service is still made in either case so if you have been served or even think you were served, then you need to see a lawyer NOW and not post questions.
