Can a debt collector do that? Sure. Should they? No. Would they? I find it hard to believe. When I have debts to resolve for clients, every law firm or debt collection agency I have dealt with wants a power of attorney or a letter of representation. So I find it very hard to believe that a legitimate debt collection agency would risk its reputation and expose itself to a lawsuit by dealing with someone other than the debtor.
