Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My finance and I recently ended our 4 year engagement. When he left he took my engagement ring with him. The ring was purchased 4 years ago with some other jewelry that I had previously. Am I entitled to the ring or at least the portion that I paid for the ring.

Case law about rings is highly complex. In most cases it is treated as a gift and you keep it, unless your conduct or actions caused the engagement to end. Even there, if you paid for part of it, a court would probably give it to you.

I agree with Mr. Ashman. The ring is usually considered a gift, unless you broke off the engagement, or your actions caused him to break it off. You would probably get your portion. I don't know the value of the ring, but you would have to decide if the ring, or you portion of the value, is worth pursuing in court. If you did decide to go after your portion, it would be beneficial to your case if you had receipts or documentation showing your contribution.
