Legal Question in Immigration Law in Georgia

How long can a Canadian Citizen stay as a visitor in the US?

I am a Canadian Citizen currently visiting the US. I have been here for 6 months. I heard that 6 months is the limit to stay on visitor status - is that correct? If not, how long can i stay as a visitor? I am not working here, i am only spending time in a monastery and growing spiritually. Can I stay longer without having to go back to Canada. I plan on applying for an R1 visa in the next 3 months, will staying here another 3 months without leaving the States create problems?

Thanks!

You need to apply for an extension. Once your visa expires you are in illegal status which can lead to being barred from returning to the United States for a number of years.
