Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Georgia

In the state of Georgia I rented an apartment from someone using his business which is a commercial lease type. I ended up moving out and notifying him in advance. I paid him the deposit and 2 or 3 payments and one to the lease office. I assume that who ever he got to lease the apartments after me didn't pay up or he didn't pay them for my portion. Well I never at any time signed a lease with the complex at all. Today I look on my credit and there is a $4,000 balance. Is that legal if I did not sign the lease to obligate myself to it.
