It depends. What sort of "hidden" assets would there be? For land, where do you suspect your father owned land? Check the land records in the county/state where the land is located. If its money from banks, insurance policies and the like, check all the states where your father lived. Links to the state treasurers can be found at www.unclaimed.org. You also can try www.missing,money.com. Of course, if you know that your father did business with a particular insurer or worked for a particular employer, then call the insurer or employer and see. If he had investments with a place like Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard etc. same - but you probably are going to have to be the personal representative of his estate. Same for banks. Try all the banks with whom your father banked as they could hold safe deposit boxes as well as accounts. Perhaps your father will have statements among his papers if you don't know where he banked or kept his money or insurance.

For personal property like cars, boats, planes, these things are all registered and have titles. Try the regulatory authorities in the state where your father resided at the time of his death.

Failing this, you can either hire a private detective or hire a company to do an asset search.
