Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I attended a college in Nashville only for a year (2005-2006) because my loans fell thru for some reason, so I had to pay out of pocket. Being a student I had no money so for the next 2-3 yrs I worked to pay of the balance. In Jan 2009 I finally paid them the total balance. When asking to have my transcripts transferred they told me that they couldn't transfer because in April 2008 they gave my case to GRC, a collection agency, that I knew nothing about and that I owe an extra $4,000. When trying to get answers about what was going on, both the college and GRC gave me the run around and I'm totally lost I don't know what to do and I think what they are doing is completely unfair. Also, I have never known a creditor to come after you for thousands in commision. Maybe a couple hundred at the most, but $4,000 is ridiculous and they keep adding more hundreds to the $4,000 it seems like everyday.
