Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Judgement on my credit report

I have a judgement against me on my credit report. It isn't valid. It was a situation where I rented a home from someone without a lease and he tried to sue me. I was never served but somehow the jugement got through. I want to rent an apartment in a few months but don't know how this will affect me. I have rented an apartment for the last three years after the home incident but this particular apt complext didn't check my credit report - just references. What can I do to get this off of my credit report quickly?

Re: Judgement on my credit report

Nothing happens quickly with credit reports. Just because there was no WRITTEN lease does not mean you did not have a lease. It just means you had an oral lease rather than one in writing. You are still obligated to pay rent.

You would need to check the court file (or have an attorney check for you) to make sure you were not served. You can be served by the sheriff or process server giving the documents to someone else at your residence. You can also be served by publication if you could not be located.
