Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Spousal Responsiblity of a bad credit

My wife has a charge at a store that has been given to a collection service. We live in Illinois and the debt and collection agency is in Iowa. Can the collection agency damage my credit rating even though my wife generated it and I have nothing to do with it?

Re: Spousal Responsiblity of a bad credit

Not usualy, because credit info is always based on social security number, and unless she surrendered your ss number and maybe even signed your name, it should not appear, but collectors will tell husbands are always responsible for the wifes debts just to scare a payment out of you, this is not true unless it is a necessity like food shelter, medical services ect. If error occurs on your credit report you may file a hundred word statement to correct it.
