Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Child Custody

I will become a father within the next few weeks. The mother to be and I are not together any longer and we were never married. She is 19, works minimal hours, and lives with her current boyfriend. I am 33 and have my own home with a stable job. What are my chances of getting to be the custodial parent with joint custody?

Re: Child Custody

Depends on a couple of things. If you fight right away, before the child is "established" with the mother, then your chances are better. Also, once you fight for custody, if you lose, you will almost certainly be prevented from trying to change it for at least two years. So be careful about self filing. Lastly, there is more relevant items than who has the better job. The court will look at personal histories, and who would make the better parent.
