Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My divorce decree in Illinois calls for the two of us to jointly pay for our children's college expenses. My ex is now telling our children they have to pay for their own college if they want to go and also that they aren't allowed to pick the school of their choice even though the divorce decree says they can. Is the divorce decree enforceable and what percentage of each parent's payment obligation does "jointly" mean?

You need to file a Petition for Contribution prior to school starting for the court to set the amount if the two of you cannot agree. It depends on your respective income and assets. However the law limits the total amount to the cost of the University of Illinois at Champaign.
