should i hire a lawyer to help me negotiate a small claims lawsuit?

You are always better off working with an attorney to settle or defend a lawsuit. but in each case you have to evaluate whether the cost of the attorney will be offset by enough economic benefit to make sense. You have not told us enough about how much money is at stake to make that determination.
