What are lay-offs and strike?

My husband was permantly laid off in July 02.Was told they we're sending the jobs out of the country. Has been laid off these past months. Recieved a call back letter last week.He went back because he thought he had no other choice. Worked two days and they went on strike. Now he can no longer recieve his unemployment. Does he have any rights about this?
