I was charged a late fee on my rent when i payed it on the 6th. My lease states "If rent is not paid in full within 5 calendar days from the date set forth in the proceding paragraph. It states that rent is due on the 1st of every month

Insufficient information. The question is what is the rest of the sentence beginning "If rent is not paid in full within 5 calendar days from the date set forth in the proceeding paragraph...."??? SOME leases say a late charge can be tacked on from that point forward, but many go on to say a late charge will be tacked on retroactive to the 1st. Without this additional language, it is impossible to say, however at a minimum it appears a late charge would be 1 day, but under many scenarios it would be 5-6 days. If you are in Chicago and a few other locations, there are also limitations on late fees, so you'd have to let us know the exact town you are in, and if you want to ask us if the amount is proper, you'd have to let us know how much was charged.
