HOA forcing us to join

My wife purchased this house in Naperville IL in 1976. Apparenlt the HOA began after (she thinks 1978-79). She never got involved (or joined) while raising 2 kids and working. Now the HOA sent us a letter looking for back dues, stating that their records show we purchased the house in 2004! Do they have the right to do this? One neighbor told me he could not refinance because he was not a member in good standing.

You need to have an attorney review the letter as well and the by laws and declarations of the HOA.
