Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Real Estate Unit

If I lived in a 5 bedroom appartment where each bedroom was equiped with a deadbolt and each of the unrealted, adult roomates was given a unique key to his or her room, could I claim that this building was a 5 unit assuming we all signed the same lease with each of our names?

Re: Real Estate Unit

It's not clear where you'd "claim" this was a 5 unit, so I'm not sure I understand your question. And are you saying that each person signed a different (but identical) lease or that all signed the same exact lease?

It seems to me you're getting at having each person responsible for only their portion. That probably won't fly but I'd have to see the Lease to know for sure.

I do not believe that by renting out 5 separate rooms with separate locks qualifies your apartment as a 5 unit.

It sounds like a boarding house to me.
