Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

Self defence in the court

Often times, people (mostly attorneys) say if you are not going to hire a lawyer with you to the court, you gonna loose the case. That means even you are right and the officer made a mistake, the judge will still lean to the officer. Unless you have a lawyer, then your chance of winning will be very high.

I just want to know if all these are true.

Thank you.

Re: Self defence in the court

It really depends on the judge; but, you are correct, the police officers are looked upon as a more reliable witness than a person arrested for a traffic offense. This is unfortunate, but it is the way things are. Besides, the assistant states attorneys know that can't push a defense lawyer around too much. In my experience, whatever you pay a defense lawyer is generally worth it, as the offense doesn't get on your driving record if a "Not Guilty" is acheived or court supervision obtained. Because of this, your car insurance rates don't go up, and you still have driving privileges so that you can work.
