Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

next of kin's financial responsibilities to deceased parents creditors

My estranged father of 8 years recently passed away, I recieved a small sum of money from his pension and life insurance policies, as I am his closest next of kin. My question is whether or not I am now responsible for any debts outstanding he may have had. To my knowledge he didn't own any property other than a junky vehicle, which his brother now has use of. I know that many years back he had an IRS debt that may o may not have been taken care of. What steps should I take to find out what my legal responsibilities are regarding his finances?
