Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

I got behind in my credit card payments. I was contacted by a collection agency stating they offering me settlement of debt. If I paid them $10 now, they would send written statement of agreement of $400 of the $800 debt. I paid the $10. I got the written statement saying we agreed that $400 would settle the debt. I went to credit union, got check sent to collection agency for $400 to settle the debt that was showing on my credit report as being in collections... I thought all was good. I get check back from collection agency with note stating they no longer have my account. Next day I get court paper stating the credit card ppl suing me for the debt. The collection ppl HAD my account when they accepted the $10 payment.! I tried to pay my debt, but I am being screwed about.!

You may be able to enforce the $400 settlement, but you will need to have an attorney properly present your story.
