Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

A former landlord hired one debt collector 6 months ago who provided a roughly $7,200 debt figure. Within 4 days I sent a written request for itemization and to officially dispute the debt. I never heard back from that collector. Yesterday, I received notice from a new debt collector representing the same landlord now claiming I owe $10,200. Are they really allowed to do this if the first collector never provided any itemization?

They are supposed to provide you, upon request, for a breakdown, including principal owed (back rent and damages), plus interest and collection fees. Whether they changed collection services or not, your debt continues to rise because the interest is accumulating if you're not making payments. If you think that you owe something, you should at least pay what you think you owe. You should probably get an attorney at this point to help you because it's getting out of hand and it isn't a do-it-yourself project to resolve this.
