How can I help my illegal mexican girlfriend become a legal resident while in the U.S. She also wants to attend college but has no money. Family is also illegal but her mother has a brother who is a permanant resident living in the U.S. I am only 16 and want to send my girlfriend to live a successful life. Please help.

Re: Illegal immigration

1) You are 16. This is NOT your responsibility.

2) Her family has to get right, before she can have a successful life.

This is not because she has done something 'wrong', but because if she doesn't she will always be looking over her shoulder,-- and so will you if you stay together.

If one of the family members is here legally, that person should go down to immigration and find out how to help th efamily live in the US legally. It may be that he can help your girlfriend, but I suspect the entire family will have to take care of this themselves.

It's wonderful you want to help,--maybe you can intern with a local immigration attorney who will agree to look into it for you? That's one place to start,--or go down to the local law school immigration clinic and/or immigrant support association and offer to help out there. You might pick up some useful tips.

Finally, the best thing you can do for her, is to get yourself into college and into a good situation so that you are in the position to help.

At 16, your options are limited, but the good thing is, you've a fresh brain that can be creative: take a look at the different types of visas on the government website and see whether there is anything that might apply.
