Legal Question in Insurance Law in Indiana

My kids and I live with my elderly parents and have, for the last 16 years. My parents are the home owners. This past winter, an over head pipe broke and flooded 3 rooms. We were forced out of our home for 7 weeks while repairs were made. Instead of a 6 block drive to work, I had a 5 mile drive. I came by the house twice a day, every single day to feed and give water to the outdoor pets, and to shovel the side walk. I submitted receipts for everything I spent while stuck in the hotel. Nothing was a luxury. My kids came home for a weekend and forgot to bring socks and underwear. Since we couldn't get into our home to get necessities, I bought him some at Walmart. Out of receipts for over a thousand dollars, I got a check for 174. I made a written request for the remainder of what I spent out of pocket for food... I had to buy 2 wi-fi adapters so our computers would work while we in hotel, etc. Now Insurance company says they don't owe me anything because I am not the policy holder!! Is this true?!!

They may be correct. It wasn't your house and wasn't your insurance policy and you didn't pay anything for the insurance. Take the insurance policy to an attorney however, to review, to see if there was any possibility of coverage provided to you as a guest or renter.
