Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

When I was 17 and my boyfriend (now husband) was 20 we signed a lease for an apartment. About 3 months after living there our daughter was born and my husband lost his job. We moved in with my grandparents and explained to the landlords our situation. Now, 4 (almost 5) years later we have purchsed a house and the landlord from 5 years ago keeps driving by and has been telling friends of ours that we owe them money. I'm afraid he will sue us. Can he do this?

If it was a written contract he's got ten years so yes, he could.
