Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Iowa

I understand the concept of life estates in Iowa,but a recent situation I heard of had me wondering.

A man who had been divorced twice moved in with his sick mother. He has 4 kids all together.

They put the place they live in into a lfe estate under her name.

She dies,he remarries this has been 3 years ago and according to the assessor's tax sheet(for delinquent taxes) it's still under his mother's life estate.

My question. Is it just laziness that someone would not go and put the home in thier own name or is there a legal explanation
