Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Kansas

When I left my last job, I was required to pay back tuition reimbursement, which I paid in 3 installments (according to a contract). The second check, however, was never cashed, and I honestly did not realize this.

Now (15 months after the payments) out of the blue, my old company sent a letter threatening to sue. I'm willing to pay the remaining balance, and I just want to talk this out with them without legal action.

They're in FL and I'm in KS. If my talks with them fail somehow, do they have legal jurisdiction to sue me from FL?

There are several avenues for a plaintiff in one state to sue a defendant in another. If they can prove jurisdiction, (or you fail to respond after being served) they might be able to file suit in a Florida Court and serve you in Kansas. If they obtain judgment there, they might be able to register that Judgment in Your Kansas County, and execute upon your assets or wages there. Based upon the facts you described, they might be able to just sue you in Kansas. If you get sued, either way, consult directly with an attorney in your area, and don't miss any of the important deadlines.

Good luck
