Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Kentucky

Trying to get home

I moved to Kentucky from Maryland with my boyfriend. We bought a car together for me on which I pay everything. I am trying to leave him and go back home to Maryland but everytime I try he says he will report the car stolen. Is it possible for him to do this? My name is on the loan and title and he doesn't pay for anything on the car. can I just leave and go home or will he be able to hold this issue over my head so I stay afraid to be pulled over for grand theft auto? Please help me.

Re: Trying to get home

If your name is on the title, a records check will reveal that you "own" the car. You can't steal what you own, generally speaking.

My suggestion is to get ready to leave and then notify local law enforcement of the situation (and provide them with a copy of the title).

You can do this yourself or seek help from a lawyer or law enforcement officer. Have you considered getting a restraining order/Domestic Violence Order against him (if the facts support it)? Check with the office on the first floor of the Judicial Center at 7th and Jefferson downtown.

Good luck.
