Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

building a career

I'm orginally from the state of Louisiana and I currently resided in the state of Georgia. I plan on going to law and applying for policer officer position to build my career, but i'm kind of ashamed and embrassed about my past. I'm very scared and I'd be hurt if I was looked down upon. Please encourage me because I dont know were to start. I would like to get the issue cleared up and have it looked over due to the career I've chosen to persue in. I don't know where to start and I need some guidance. May you help me?

Re: building a career

I encourage you. Unfortunately you do not say what you are embarrassed about. Only that it is your past.

Re: building a career

I certainly encourage you to advance your career. To go into law enforcement, they will pick through your background with a fine toothed comb. Rather than be afraid of the unknown (how they will view your past), you should try to find the hiring guidelines/requirements of the law enforcement agency(ies) to which you will apply. You could consult with an attorney regarding how you maybe could "get the issue cleared up" through legal channels (for example, expunging criminal record).

I am in Florida, and I have no knowledge of LA or GA. But, I can tell you that in FL, becoming licensed by the FL Bar to practice law is an extremely rigorous process, and they leave no stone of your past unturned. They also look highly upon complete honesty and demonstrated improvement from prior wrongs (whether it be the time which has elapsed, treatment programs completed, counseling, or participation in mentoring programs for those with similar problems).

I encourage you to become completely informed, to seek legal counsel regarding legal issues, and to be completely honest throughout the whole process. I wish you the best of luck!!

Regards,

Sarah
