my father passed away last week. he was married to his wife 3 times. he has five children. 2-never married to the mother, 2 with first wife and 1 with last wife. she has not let us know about any policies are anything but calling for our ss numbers and copies of birth certificates... should we open succesion ourselves?

I would say yes. Any heir or even a creditor can open the succession. If she is not doing it, you should. You can have yourself appointed as the executor and compel her to turn over the information and documents you are seeking.
