Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

My husband was charged in 1999 for co conspiracy of murder and was sentence to Life all subspended but 35 Years. My question is, if the mayor made a new law in 2006-2007 that life means natural Life, what's the point of an suspended Life sentence? I'm confused. Please help!

My understanding is that while a person might become parole eligible after serving 50% of the sentence for violent crime, any sentence involving life also requires the governor's approval. Your husband might have to serve 85% of the 35 years, assuming that he earns and keeps all of the possible good behavior credits. Your husband's sentence may not be extended from 35 years to life, unless he does something to violate the implicit agreement that he has with the sentencing court to obey all laws.
