Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

need a good lawyer

I talked with two lawyers on my divorce case and both wanted from 3000-4000 dollars up front. I am not a rich person, but I do not want a bad lawyer. I can put 1000-1200 down and pay 300 month but cannot find a good lawyer to help me. What should I do? If I cannot get a good divorce lawyer I will loose everything. time is of the essence. how can you help? Maryland native

In my opinion, the best way to find a lawyer is to ask a friend who has used a lawyer for a similiar problem as yours, and ask them how satisfied they were.

Many lawyers, such as myself, accept credit cards. Unfortunately, if your case is contested and you have significant assets to protect, or there are custody, support or alimony issues in play, these cases take a considerable amount of time and work if handled properly. In the 30 years I've been handling family cases, I always try and see if a settlement is possible before allowing my client to incur heavy legal expenses. If two people are willing to be reasonable, a settlement should be achievable. If not, I'm fully prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect my client and get the best possible result.

Keep looking. I'm sure you can find attorneys that offer a variety of fee options and differing rates. A lot depends on your location, the perceived complexity of the case, the anticipated total fees, and many other factors. Some county bar associations offer referral services, and some people qualify for referrals to attorneys who agree to accept reduced fees or delayed payment options.
