Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Housewife filing a civil suit in cohabitation case

My ex and I lived together unmarried for 5yrs in a house in his name only. We have two children(5 & 3), and he has ALWAYS had the main income, and supported the family wholly, which he still does from a different household...with the exception of the utility bills(elec. water & phone/total no more than $500/mo), and NOW the groceries. I was told by a family ct attorney that even though I can't file for ''alimony'', I can file a civil suit for ''damages'' for the past 5/6yrs for being a housewife. What exactly can I sue for, and how do I start?

There is no "palimony" or common law marriage under Maryland law, so you have no basis for damages. But we could seek child support and possibly emergency family maintenance for you (in lieu of "damages/alimony"). If you need assistance, contact us. Law Office of Adele L.
