Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

I would like to willing relinquish custody of my child to my parents, but have no idea how to go about it. I am giving up custody because I'll be enlisting in the navy. Also, my sons father and I currently have no custody agreement... But he Is not fit to care for my son, and currently only sees him about twice a year, if that. If he agrees, how would we go about this? If he disagrees to give custody to my parents, what would I need to do to make sure my parents get custody?

Your parents would have to file a consent petition for custody, and you would have to have a court hearing. A better option would be a petition for temporary guardianship, which would enable your parents to exercise typical parental rights, but enable you to resume custody when you are ready to do so (as when your tour ends or you get a stateside assignment). You should see an experienced family lawyer to more specifically go over your options. Your county bar association may have a referral service, or you can always do an online search if you don't have a personal recommendation.
