2-weeks Notice

Once you have given your employer 2 weeks notice of your quitting, can they legally fire you and deny you the pay you would have earned finishing out the two weeks remaining?

Re: 2-weeks Notice

The answer depends on several variables. Assuming there are no issues of discrimination or retaliation, this is generally allowable because Maryland is an at-will employment state, meaning that either the employer or employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time. Adler v. American Standard Corp. 291 Md 31 (1981).

However, the employer can change the terms of employment in several different ways, including a personnel manual, general office policy, or an employment contract... in which case, the terms set out by the employer could be used to determine if your termination was proper.

If you decide to see a lawyer, make sure you take any written information your employer has given you about your employment.
